The prominent new release of the week, the Anees Bazmee directed WELCOME BACK, the sequel to the highly successful WELCOME, starring Anil, John, Naseer, Nana, Paresh and Shruti, embarked on a good start, during the morning shows, with the best business coming from Mumbai-Maharashtra and Gujarat, as also UP (part of Delhi–UP territory). The film picked up in a big way during the latter shows
The first day is expected to be one of the best of the year, maybe amongst the top 3 (14-15 Crore). The Janmashtami holiday on Saturday (in many parts of India) is expected to help the cause of the movie further, resulting in a good weekend haul.
Having said that, WELCOME BACK is a very expensive film, with a 90 crore (all inclusive) cost, and it has to sustain for at least a couple of weeks to emulate the success of WELCOME.
Meanwhile, after a good opening weekend (33-34 crore), the Kabir Khan venture, Saif-Katrina starrer PHANTOM, maintained reasonably during the weekdays and ended up netting 49-50 crore during the opening week from India. One must add here that PHANTOM has taken a hit from WELCOME BACK on its second Friday, and the battle for survival becomes tougher, though not impossible.
PHANTOM has to put up at least a 20 crore second week to be considered a plus venture despite handsome recoveries from non-theatrical rights and a decent overseas show.
